The key ignition itself is all mechanical and just operates
another mechanism.
There are no contacts to be made within that particular key
ignition.
Sounds like your problem was beyond the key ignition.
It is possable that the key ignition itself may have
malfunctioned and it was not letting the plug travel to all
nessessary positions.
A bad key wouldn`t cause that to happen.
anyway,
Thanks for all your help Charlie

the 84 has no vats system.
also,
when the resister pellet in the vats key gets warn. the
risisters value changes.
when the value changes too much, the risister value does not
match the car and the the emissions are shut down..

nah, vats keys very in price between different suppliers.
that could very well be why there is a difference in price.

Charlie
!993 Corvette Convertible
that is cheap enough.
however,
the vats keys have come down in price over the last 5 years
or so.
back then they wholesaled for 10 to 12 bucks each.
now days, they can be bought for less than 5 bucks.
